FANGCHENGBAO BAO 8

2026-10-01 20:00:03

Model Overview

The FANGCHENGBAO BAO 8 is the second model introduced by BYD's specialised, personalised sub-brand, FANGCHENGBAO. Positioned as a flagship new energy rugged mid-to-large SUV, it was officially launched on 12 November 2024. As the first collaborative effort between BYD and Huawei, the vehicle combines BYD's DMO Super Hybrid Off-road Platform with the Huawei Qiankun ADS autonomous driving suite.

The BAO 8 has since received several line-up updates and variant additions. In October 2025, a spacious 5-seater variant was introduced; on 13 May 2026, the Flash Charge Edition made its debut, featuring the second-generation Blade Battery and 800V ultra-fast charging technology. As of mid-2026, the BAO 8 range comprises the 2025 Zhiyong Edition, the 5-Seater Edition, and the Flash Charge Edition, priced between RM379,800 and RM423,800, with the Flash Charge Edition offered at an introductory price of RM409,800. Its key rivals in the RM400,000-bracket rugged SUV segment include the Tank 700 Hi4-T and Li L8.

Design Language

The BAO 8 incorporates a "Future Starship Aesthetics" design philosophy, merging the muscular stance of a traditional off-roader with futuristic, sci-fi styling cues. Up front, a closed-off grille is flanked by rectangular LED headlamp clusters, integrated with dot-matrix illuminated elements and a breathing effect on the central emblem. The sculpted bonnet ridges and silver bash plate further underline its go-anywhere credentials.

In profile, the SUV sports clean, straight lines, with flared wheel arches housing 20-inch off-road alloy wheels (with 21-inch forged wheels available on the range-topper). Fixed side steps come standard, while higher-spec trims upgrade to power-deployable side steps. At the rear, the rugged aesthetic continues with a side-hinged tailgate and a spare tyre cover inspired by planetary rings.

Dimensions-wise, it measures 5,195 mm in length, 1,994 mm in width, and 1,905 mm in height, riding on a 2,920 mm wheelbase. While official boot volume figures have not been released, the removal of the third row in the 5-seater model substantially expands cargo capacity. Fully laden, minimum ground clearance stands at 220 mm, with an approach angle of 30°, a departure angle of 29°, and a maximum wading depth of 890 mm (extendable to 1,000 mm via the DiSus-P system). Four exterior colours are available: Night Shadow Black, Lake Green, Star Moon Silver, and Dawn Gold, with the latter three complemented by a floating roof design.

The cabin blends rugged styling with high-tech elements, headlined by a four-screen setup comprising a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 17.3-inch floating central infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch front passenger display, and a 50-inch AR-HUD. The steering wheel is wrapped in genuine leather (synthetic leather on the 5-seater) and features power adjustment and heating. Drive selection is handled via an electronic shifter. Premium soft-touch surfaces and metallic trim accents run throughout the cabin, while upper-tier trims gain 128-colour ambient lighting.

Powertrain and Performance

The entire BAO 8 range is built on the DMO Super Hybrid Off-road Platform, running a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain that combines a longitudinal 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with dual front and rear electric motors. The engine produces 200 kW (approx. 272 PS) and 380 Nm of torque. Total system output is rated at 550 kW (approx. 748 PS) and 760 Nm, delivered through an E-CVT and an electric all-wheel-drive system (front + rear dual motors). It completes the 0–100 km/h sprint in 4.8 seconds, on to a top speed of 180 km/h.

Battery specifications differ by model year:

  • 2025 Zhiyong Edition: Features a 36.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack from FinDreams Powertrain, offering a WLTC pure electric range of 100 km and a combined CLTC range of 1,200 km.

  • 2026 Flash Charge Edition: Equipped with a 46.7 kWh battery pack delivering a combined range of 1,380 km and supporting 800V high-voltage DC fast charging.

On the charging front, the Flash Charge Edition's 800V architecture enables a 30% to 80% state of charge in approximately 16 minutes; the 2025 model supports 120 kW DC fast charging, taking around 0.27 hours. A 6 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L / VTOL) external power supply function is standard across the board, ideal for outdoor camping setups.

Fuel economy is rated at a combined 1.76 L/100 km under WLTC cycles, with depleted-battery fuel consumption standing at approximately 8.87 L/100 km. The fuel tank capacity is 91.5 litres, compatible with RON 92 petrol.

Chassis and Handling

The BAO 8 is built on a robust ladder-frame chassis (body-on-frame), supported by double-wishbone independent suspension at both front and rear—an advanced setup for off-roaders that balances body control with ride refinement.

BYD's DiSus-P Ultra Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System is standard across the range, offering three levels of stiffness adjustment and dual-valve damper control. Key capabilities include:

  • Suspension Travel: Offers 140 mm of height adjustability, automatically adapting ride height to vehicle speed, drive mode, and terrain;

  • Camping Levelling: Automatically levels the body on uneven ground when parked, providing a flat cabin floor for resting;

  • Three-Wheel Driving Mode: Actively modulates suspension loads in extreme recovery situations to maintain drive on three wheels;

  • LiDAR Road Preview: Combines camera and LiDAR data to scan road surfaces ahead and pre-emptively adjust damper rates for improved ride comfort.

Off-road hardware includes standard front, centre, and rear differential locks ("triple locks") along with a low-range 4WD (4L) mode. Braking is handled by ventilated discs all around with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). It rides on 275/55 R20 tyres, backed by a tailgate-mounted full-sized spare wheel.

Cabin and Equipment

The BAO 8 runs on the DiLink 150 Intelligent Cockpit System, centred around the 17.3-inch floating touchscreen, supported by the 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, 12.3-inch front passenger screen, and 50-inch AR-HUD. Computing power comes from a BYD9000 chip co-developed with leading semiconductor firms, delivering 20 TOPS of AI processing capability. The system supports 5G connectivity, over-the-air (OTA) updates, four-zone voice command recognition, and HUAWEI HiCar smartphone mirroring. Built-in navigation is powered by Huawei Petal Maps.

Audio duties are managed by a standard 18-speaker DEVIALET premium sound system, incorporating driver headrest speakers for an immersive surround sound experience.

Standard comfort and convenience equipment across the range includes:

  • Power-adjustable, ventilated, heated, and massaging front seats with driver's memory function

  • Reclining, heated, ventilated, and massaging second-row seats (massage function standard on 5-seater)

  • Independent rear climate control, tri-zone automatic climate control, and an on-board compressor cool-and-warm box

  • Panoramic tilt-and-slide sunroof and front 50W wireless fast charging pad

  • Soft-close doors and power-deployable side steps (higher trims)

  • In-cabin fragrance system (omitted in selected 2025 variants)

Seating layouts are available in 5-seater, 6-seater (2+2+2), and 7-seater (2+3+2) formats. The 5-seater version, introduced in October 2025, discards the third row to unlock greater second-row legroom and boot space.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

Driver Assistance: Huawei Qiankun ADS Standard Across the Range

Representing the first joint model between BYD and Huawei, the BAO 8 brings high-level ADAS capabilities to the rugged SUV market. The entire lineup is fitted with the Huawei Qiankun ADS suite; the Flash Charge Edition runs the ADS 4.0 software, while the 2025 model features ADS 3.0.

Passive Safety is reinforced by 14 airbags fitted as standard on the BAO 8, including dual front airbags, front side airbags, rear side airbags, front/rear side curtain airbags, and a driver knee airbag. The 2025 5-seater replaces the driver's knee airbag with a front-centre airbag. The vehicle is built with a high-strength cage structure engineered to meet rigorous crash-test standards.

Market Performance and Reception

Since its launch, the FANGCHENGBAO BAO 8 has seen mixed sales performance, moving from a strong initial reception to sustained sales pressure. In its first delivery week, the BAO 8 clocked 818 deliveries, a promising start in the RM400,000-class rugged SUV category. However, subsequent sales momentum slowed, with industry data indicating an average monthly volume of under 2,000 units in 2025—trailing well behind rival Tank 500, which maintained monthly sales above 5,000 units.

Industry Analysts point to several key reasons for this performance:

  1. Packaging and Pricing Strategy: The 5-seater variant launched in October 2025 retained the same price as the 7-seater despite dropping the third row, while simultaneously omitting the driver's knee airbag and genuine leather steering wheel. This was viewed by media and buyers as a reduction in value-for-money.

  2. Pure EV Range Compromise: The 2025 model's 100 km WLTC electric-only range is relatively modest among PHEVs in its segment, where buyers typically expect over 200 km of EV range.

  3. Brand Equity Building: As a fresh sub-brand, FANGCHENGBAO still requires time to establish premium brand equity and market acceptance in the RM400,000 tier.

The introduction of the BAO 8 Flash Charge Edition in May 2026 is poised to address these challenges. The new variant expands combined range to 1,380 km, introduces standard 800V flash charging, and upgrades to Huawei Qiankun ADS 4.0, all at an introductory price of RM409,800. Following its debut, market reception has been positive, positioning it as a potential sales catalyst for the BAO 8 range.

Owner Feedback highlights several key strengths:

  • Strong technological credibility backed by BYD's electrification hardware and Huawei's ADAS software

  • Brisk 4.8-second 0–100 km/h acceleration balanced with the plush ride of the DiSus-P suspension

  • Serious off-road credentials with a ladder-frame chassis and triple differential locks

  • 14 airbags and an extensive suite of luxury cabin appointments

Common criticisms include:

  • The 100 km EV-only range on 2025 models limits daily urban electric usability

  • Spec adjustments on the 5-seater variant perceived as de-speccing without a price reduction

  • Relatively higher fuel consumption during depleted-battery highway cruising (approx. 8.87 L/100 km)

  • Brand prestige still maturing compared to established competitors in the same price tier

Conclusion

The FANGCHENGBAO BAO 8 showcases the combined engineering strength of BYD and Huawei, establishing a distinctive market position as an "electrified rugged flagship" underpinned by three hallmark technologies: the DMO Super Hybrid Off-road Platform, the DiSus-P Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System, and Huawei Qiankun ADS. In the RM400,000 SUV space, it bridges the gap between pure mechanical off-roaders (like the Tank 700) and premium urban SUVs (like the Li L8), delivering a compelling package that is off-road ready, highly intelligent, and luxurious. The addition of the Flash Charge Edition directly resolves range and charging concerns, paving the way for the BAO 8 to strengthen its foothold in the premium new energy off-road SUV segment.
